1819–1899: The Spiritual Awakening of Hawaii
1819
Kapu System Abolished
King Kamehameha II and Queen Ka'ahumanu end traditional idol worship, opening the islands to spiritual transformation.
1820
Protestant Missionaries Arrive
Hiram Bingham and the ABCFM land in Kailua-Kona, initiating gospel proclamation in Hawaiian.
1834
Titus Coan Lands in Hilo
Evangelist from the Second Great Awakening era brings revival-style preaching to Hawaii.
1836–1840
Hilo Revival
Over 13,000 converts baptized; Sunday attendance at Haili Church peaks at 10,000. One of the largest revivals in church history.
1850s–1890s
Decline and Spiritual Dormancy
Western influences, political upheaval, and diseases weaken early church vitality.
Early Pentecostal Era
1900–1949: Early Pentecostal Seeds and Pioneering Missions

Assemblies of God Begins in Hawaii
Rev. Frank & Mrs. Fischer arrive in Hilo as the first official AG missionaries.

Bernice Strickland Called
Saved in Georgia; receives vision to reach Chinese children in Hawaii.
1926–1928
Bible Training
Bernice studies at Glad Tidings Bible Institute in San Francisco.
May 1, 1929
Strickland Lands in Hilo
Begins ministry in homes, with children, and in jails. Converts include 3 convicted murderers.
1930s
Ministry Expands
Outreach grows among Filipinos and Catholics; revival breaks out in the Airport Prison Camp.
1938
Rev. Peter & Julene Funk Arrive
Begin ministry in Laupāhoehoe and later in Hilo alongside Bernice.

Glad Tidings Assembly Dedicated
First official AG church building in Hawaii, located in Hilo.
1949
Aloha Bible Institute (ABI) Founded
Leadership training begins locally for pastors and ministers.
1954–1963
Rev. Harold Headrick as Superintendent
Aggressive church planting on Oahu, including First Assembly Honolulu, ʻEwa, and Māʻili.
1964
Move Toward District Status
Hawaii AG votes to transition from missions oversight to a fully recognized district.
District Recognition Era
1966–1989: District Recognition and Growth Explosion

Hawaii AG Becomes Official District
Ceremony held at First Assembly, Honolulu. Rev. Peter Funk elected first Superintendent.
1967–1973
Rev. Woodrow Yasuhara Serves as Superintendent
First local-born leader to rise to this role; previously discipled by Strickland.
1970s
Royal Rangers, Missionettes & Camps Thrive
Emphasis on equipping the next generation.
1970s–1980s
15+ New Churches Planted
Despite financial strain, local churches expand across all major islands.

District Councils and Conferences Expand
